Funmigurumi Poochie Dog No. 4: Toby

Best Blog Tips

I got the idea for Toby and had to let it go round and round my mind for a little bit before I could put it together, but here he is! His textured face will be a lot of fun for any Ami lover, young or old.
You might think that it would have been easier to have made Toby using the loop stitch, but that stitch wasn't going to give me the look I wanted, that is the reason why I made Toby this way.
Materials:
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Bright Yellow
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Black
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Soft Brown
Crochet hook size H
Crochet hook size C or B
Pins
Fiberfill
Scissors
Blunt needle
Body (make 2)- With Bright Yellow and H hook, ch 33. Row 1- 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across (32 sc). Ch 1, turn. Rows 2 to 31- make 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. If you want to, sew bottom and sides of body as soon as you have finished both sides (I like to finish as I go, it makes the toy come alive quicker), leaving the top open for stuffing. Place both right sides facing and sew the sides and the bottom using the tails you left as you crocheted. Fasten off. Turn both inside out and set aside.
Muzzle-Ch 8. Rnd 1- 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch till 1 chain before end of row, 2 sc in last ch of row. Turn arund and make 1 sc in each
of the loops of foundation chain until you reach the one before the last one, 2 sc in that last loop. Slip st to join round.
Rnd 2- 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, *1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * around, slip st to join round.
Rnd 3- 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, rep from * around and slip st to join rnd.

Rnd 5- 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each of next 5 sc, *2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each ofnest 5 sc, rep from * around. Slip st to join rnd.
Rnd 6- 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each of next 6 sc, *2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 6 sc, rep around, slip st to join rnd.
Rnd 7- 1 sc in each sc around, slip stitch to join rnd. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with.
Moustaches- (Make 2): Ch 8. Row 1- 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Row 2-(Working on back loops only) 1 sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Rows 3 to 5- Rep row 2. Rows 3 to 5-(Working in back loops only): Rep row 2. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. Moustache hair: Measure and cut 26 strands of yarn 8 inches long . How to attach strands: Once you have your lengths of yarn cut, proceed to attach the "hair" to the piece as follows: Turn the piece over and working on the loops on the wrong side (the side where the back loop stitches are more prominent), fold 1 strand of yarn in half and using a size C or B crochet hook, inser the hook into the first loop downwards, pull up the strand of yarn by its middle, making a loop in the hook, pull that loop up until you are able to manually pass the ends of the strand through the loop, pull again to close the loop and secure the strand in place. Repeat with evbery loop on that row. Rows 2 to 5- Rep row 1. Once you have finished with all the strands, take the hook and pull the strands to the front, carefully leaving the knots in the back. Sew the piece in place on the side of the muzzle by stitching the edge of the piece all around with the tail you had left. Fasten off.
Eyebrows- With Bright Yellow and H hook, ch 4. Row 1- 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across, (3 sc), ch 1, turn.
Row 2- (Working in back loops only) 1 sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn. (3 Sc). Rows 3 to 4- rep row 2. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with.
Cut 18 strands of yarn 4 inches long (9 per brow). Fold strands in half and hook them to the side of eyebrow strip where the back loop work is prominent.
Pull to the front just as you did for Mustache. Pin in place above eyes. Take tail and thread a blunt needle, sew in place as seen in photos.
Note: You can add more if you want to but by now I figure you must be tired of cutting, hooking and pulling.
Nose- With Warm Brown and H hook, ch 7. Ro1-1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch acrossd. Ch 1, turn. Rows 2 to 4- 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. Eyes-(Make 2): With Black and H hook, ch 2. Rnd 1- Make 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Slip stitch to join round. Fasten off. Join Soft Brown. Rnd 2- 2 sc, 1 sc, 2 sc, rep around. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. Pin in place and sew as seen in photos.
Tail- Ch 13. Row 1- 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. (12 sc). Rows 2 to 10- Working in back loops only, make 1 sc in each sc across. (12 sc).
Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. Measure and cut 58 strands of Bright Yellow yarn 8 inches long. Turn the piece around towards the side where the loops are prominent and folding each strand in half and using a size C or size B crochet hook, attach the folded strand to each loop as explained for the moustache. Pull the loops through to the other side, leaving only the knots on the wrong side. Using the tail you left, thread a blunt needle and sew Toby's tail into a tube, close up the bottom of the tube and bring thread up and attach the tail to Toby's back on the 13th row, (counting from the bottom) well centered. Fasten off.
Ears, Back Piece (Make 2)- With Bright Yellow, ch 7. Row 1- 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each sc across. Ch 1, turn (6 sc). Row 2- 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each sc till last sc, 2 sc in last sc, (8 sc). Ch 1, turn. Row 3- 1 sc in each of first 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each sc to end of row, (10 sc). Ch 1, turn.

Rnds 8 to 13- Make 1 sc in each sc around. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. Stuff legs with Fiberfill and sew to bottom of body as seen in photos.
Arms- With Bright Yellow, and H hook, Ch 2. Rnd 1- Make 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, slip st to close round. Rnd 2- Make 2 sc in each sc around.
Rnd 3- Make 1 sc in each of first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around. Rnd 4- Make 1 sc in each of first 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around.
Rnd 5- Make 1 sc in each sc around. Rnds 6 to 11- Make 1 sc in each sc around. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with. Stuff arms and attach to body as seen in photos (about half way down to give some room to fluffy ears).
Ears, Front Piece (Make 2)- Repeat the same rows as for back pieces but this time, work rows 1 to 3 only on back loops. Work the rest of the rows on both loops. Fasten off.
Measure 28 strands of Bright Yellow yarn, each 8 inches long. Attach 1 strand of yarn to each loop on the first 3 rows on each front part of ear. Sew front part to back part. Attach to Toby's head as seen in photos. Fasten off.
Stuff Toby's body with Fiberfill and sew up top of head. Attach ears as seen in photos. Fasten off. You're done!

  3. I hope you keep up with this. Which side of the ears do you attach?

  4. You make the ears and sew them up and attach the "hair" leaving only the bottom of hte ear open. You attach the open bottom of the ear to the side of the head following photos, the "hairy" side facing upwards. Fasten off. That way, your dog will have cute, floppy, hairy ears. Hopes this helps!
